Many people are choosing to bypass the regular milk, as they head for such alternatives as soy (bad!!) and almond milk, among others.

People are doing this for good reason. Almond milk provides a range of nutritive benefits, and it can be a healthy and tasty snack. In fact, almond milk has about one third the calories that regular milk has. Just reaching for it, rather than regular milk, will save you a lot of calories per glass!

Depending on the brand of almond milk you purchase, you can expect that a serving of the unsweetened beverage will only set you back about 35 to 40 calories. But in those calories comes a range of nutrition, including calcium, Vitamin E, Vitamin D, Vitamin A, and Magnesium.

Sticking with the unsweetened types will help you avoid the unnecessary sugar, as well as additional calories. Give almond milk a try by itself, and also consider using it in your protein shake, which was mentioned earlier. Any place you would normally use regular milk you may want to substitute it with unsweetened almond milk. It will save calories, while providing you plenty of nutrition.

Unsweetened almond milk is a tasty snack to have any time of the day!

There are times when you just want a beverage as a snack. Everyone wants to do that from time to time. But what you reach for can make a big difference when it comes to your diet.

If you reach for a soda, you are usually going to get a bunch of high fructose corn syrup, which is linked to obesity. If you reach for some other drinks, you may end up with a lot of empty calories in the form of sugar. There are also options that will leave you with a lot of fat, such as ice cream or fast food shakes.

But there is a better option. A protein shake, which you can make yourself or buy pre-made. They will provide you with a lot of protein and nutrients, and they will help you avoid the high fructose corn syrup and sugary drinks, which will spike your insulin, as well as adding empty calories to your day.

Protein shakes have been beneficial in helping many people to lose weight, as well as maintain a healthy, athletic body.

To find a good protein shake that fits your weight loss and health goals, stop by a local health food store or GNC and speak with someone that works there. They can help answer questions about which ones are ideal for what you want to do (lose weight, build muscle, etc.). Me, I usually buy Optimum Nutrition’s whey protein from Amazon.com. It works especially well with my l-Day Diet.

Protein shakes may not be quite as easy to have on the run, unless you have made it up ahead of time or are buying them pre-made. However, if you are going to be around the house and want a good healthy pick-me-up, a protein shake will deliver the nutrition you need!

In modern times, dieters have come to look upon the ketogenic diet as a solution to weight loss and nutritional management. In fact, it has garnered quite a bit of spotlight amongst other diets, many of which are easily said to be adaptations of the ketogenic diet with varying similarities. It can be considered trendy, but setting aside it being trend-like, the ability for the practice of ketosis to facilitate weight loss is proven and consistent if done successfully—and in that sense, it’s no passing fad.

The main proponent to its growing popularity, however, is the idea that the diet limits the individuals’ intake of carbohydrates, which reduces the cravings for carbs more and more over time, and as a result of less craving, the individual will then be able to consume fewer calories without feeling the need to indulge. It is pretty well known that if one’s intake of calories is lowered, weight is lowered congruently. Similarly, it’s become much more mainstream in recent years that ketogenic diets are well known for lowering weight effectively.

Nonetheless, the ketogenic diet should beconsidered as an effective means and not a trendy diet made of fluff. As popular as many diets are, utilizing ketosis and keeping up with it is not largely “popular”—or rather, frequently maintained for weight loss by crazed dieters desperate for a quick solution—because maintaining a ketogenic diet requires a generous amount of discipline.

Despite this, the ketogenic diet is still used for weight loss by those who are committed to ketosis and understand its underlying functions and effectiveness. In most cases, those who would most benefit from this type of diet in regards to weight loss are those that are overweight due to food cravings and the temptations of gluttony, but in particular, carbohydrates. Many people crave foods high in carbs, and it’s quite easy to do so, as this includes foods such as bread, pasta, and sugar, to name just a few. Carbs can be found in a large amount in many of the foods accessible for consumption, but if one is able to limit or restrict high-carb foods, results can be made.

Although advertising and hype around similar diets, like the Adkins Diet (not to insinuate it is ineffective), can make such results too good to be true, there is plethora of knowledge on ketosis and the ketogenic to be found in bookstores and by surfing the web. Looking past those who try to throw you a sales pitch, rather, there is an abundance of scientific literature that is

well researched and shows just how empirically sound ketosis can be for weight loss, and of course, epilepsy and seizure control. According to the experts who have published studies and research in various medical journals, the research in this field does in fact indicate that a low carb diet is more effective at reducing weight than a low fat diet. What researchers also found was that even though the low carb diet proves to be more effective, if it cannot be consistently maintained for the long term, weight loss is not going to be maintained.

Nuts are one of the healthiest snacks you can ever have. Some people pick up the jar of nuts, look at the back label, and set it back down. They do this because of the fat content, but they shouldn’t!

What most people don’t understand is that the fats that are in nuts are healthy fats. So they are okay to have. They are actually good for your body! Your body needs healthy sources of fats, and nuts are one of the few foods that will deliver them. But beyond being a healthy source of fats, they are also a great source of protein, and they have other nutrients that the body needs to be healthy.

In fact, the Harvard School of Public Health found that those who try to lose weight are more successful when they stick to that of a Mediterranean Diet that includes nuts. They also found that those who eat a handful of nuts each day are better at controlling their weight.

What this means for someone who likes to snack and that needs to find healthy snacks, is that they should opt for eating a handful of nuts when they need a snack. The healthy snack will keep them feeling and looking great.

There are a lot of different types of nuts to choose from, but some are even better for you than others. So just which ones are the best?

– Walnuts – They are loaded with heart-healthy Omega-3 fatty acids.

– Almonds – They are loaded with Vitamin E, which helps your body age healthy.

Stick to these two types of nuts and you can’t go wrong. Just make sure to eat them in moderation.

Ketogenic diets have been regarded as a time-tested treatment for epilepsy for many years. Research into the benefits of practicing this type of diet—essentially the practice of ketosis, which I will explain in more detail shortly and throughout this guide—actually holds its root primarily within the medical research field, investigating its ability to successfully treat epilepsy and diabetes. Although along the years the ketogenic diet has become popular and unpopular in flux, for its difficulty in maintaining the diet, ketosis has been proven effective for controlling epilepsy in children and adults. It doesn’t just stop there though. With many benefits, ketosis has found its way into being a mainstream therapy practiced by many types of people to improve health, whether for weight loss or for a serious diabetic condition.

What is the ketogenic diet in the simplest terms possible? A good way to conceptualize the ketogenic diet is thinking of it as training your body to use fats as energy (axiomatically “burning fat”), by reducing the amount of carbohydrates you eat. A ketogenic diet can be most generally characterized by being a non-pharmacologic diet that is high in fat, moderate in protein, and low in carbohydrates. When under ketosis, your body is “trained” to use fats as energy. If there is no dietary fat in your blood, your body will begin to start utilizing your body’s fat as energy. Once you understand the ketogenic at its most base level—ketosis—it’s pretty difficult to think it couldn’t work efficiently for losing weight, let alone all of it’s other accolades and benefits—like its use of treatment for epileptic seizures.

To better understand fully what a ketogenic diet consists of, let’s take a thorough look at what happens before, during, and after ketosis, breaking down concepts as clearly as possible. If one is to undertake such a diet, this is incredibly necessary for proper implementation and definitely determines success or failure with the diet.

Chilies (sometimes spelled Chilli with two l’s) are hot stuff and they’re amazing! Don’t these herbs just keep get better and better?

Chilies originated in Mexico and central North America and evidence indicates that they have been used since 7000BC – that’s a long time! They were introduced into Asia in the 16 century and became part of the staple diet in Asian countries. Chilies are easily grown from seed or alternatively you can buy plants or seedlings at a local market or a nursery if they’re available in your area. Chili plants can either be grown in the ground or they grow easily in pots. They aren’t too keen on frost, so if in a frosty area move them to a sheltered spot when the frosts are around and if you have a dog that eats literally anything like our old Bull Mastiff Nala, you might have to hide them from the dog. We were blaming the birds for stealing our very hot chilies from our chili bush only to discover that it was actually the dog stealing them as they were ripening up! Chilies are a bit like garlic in that they’ve been used for almost as long as humans have been eating. They share with Garlic the ability to have huge health benefits on all parts of the body. Chilies help to keep us strong and healthy, boosting the immune system and making us feel great.

Chili works as a pain killer in the body and has been shown to help with headache and migraine. It is used in salves and ointments which are used externally to treat the pain of arthritis as well as other pain.

It is a well known and researched anti cancer herb and it, like garlic, helps to lower blood pressure, keep your heart healthy and is even thought to boost metabolism helping those consuming chili to lose or control their weight! Chili has been shown to reduce inflammation in the body and in the digestive tract and can help to kill the bacteria that causes stomach ulcers. Again, use it in your cooking whenever possible. Fresh is best or dried if fresh is not available. There are many different varieties of chili with differing flavours and some are definitely hotter than others.

Experiment and find something you like. A word of warning though, they are addictive and over time the taste buds tend to grow to like it hotter and hotter if you consume them regularly. That’s not a bad thing however as chilies truly are an awesome food and full of vitamins A and C! How do I use Chili?

My husband Ray, has recently become a chili fan after quitting smoking. It’s interesting what happens with the taste buds once you quit the fags. Prior to quitting he couldn’t handle any chili at all and complained bitterly if I even put a sniff of it in his meal! Now he can’t get enough of the stuff. He has been known of late

to add fresh chili to his coffee (in the plunger) from time to time. I must admit, it adds a nice kick as long as it’s not too much. I use chilies mostly in cooking – sauces, soups, stews, stir fiys – pretty much anything really.

I add chili to herbal teas sometimes also. Once again it gives a healthy kick!

Use raw in salads without the seeds or scorch the skins over a flame or in the grill and remove the skins and seeds to create a sweet, hot treat to add to a salad or over a nice piece of steak. I have also read of people using Habenero Chilies (one of the hottest chilies you can get) on toast to combat cancer along with grated raw ginger. If you Google it you’ll find information on people using this treatment (I personally have never needed to try this and I’m hoping that with my regular consumption of these herbs along with a healthy lifestyle I won’t have to!)

Although the big push for fad diets has died down a little bit, it is still estimated that at least two-thirds of Americans are on some type of diet at any given time. Although research shows the importance of eating from all the major food groups, people are still confused about what type of diet to follow, keeping the window open for more quacky solutions to pop up.

In an effort to help readers determine what makes a diet healthy and when it’s time to steer clear, I am going to discuss what makes a diet a ‘fad’ diet and why these diets are something best to stay away from. Along the way, we will discover what each food group has to offer that can be beneficial to our health.

Our bodies are uniquely designed to take advantage of the proteins, carbohydrates and fats that we eat. In order for the liver to do the best job it can for us, we actually need all of these nutrients, known as macronutrients. Even a ‘detoxifying’ diet should also include all of these macronutrients!

During the past 20 years there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States. Currently, more than 64% of US adults are either overweight or obese, according to results from the 1999-2000 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). So, look at the facts: Two thirds of all Americans are on some ‘diet’, yet we are getting fatter and fatter. Would that perhaps mean that the fad diets don’t work? Let’s talk about it.

Identifying a fad diet

A ‘fad diet’ is defined as something temporary. Therefore, it’s no surprise that these diets are not successful. Let’s begin by looking at how to identify a fad diet.

#1 – Promises a fast weight loss.

This is great, in the short term, but how many readers have or know someone who has followed one of these diets, only to regain the weight back, plus more for added bonus? When people lose weight very quickly, they lose a lot of lean muscle tissue, and the weight that comes back will most likely be more fat and less muscle, making it easier and easier to regain weight each time they drop the last fad diet. A healthy diet to follow will be one that will encourage slow, progressive weight loss over a longer period of time. It will have enough calories to support vigorous exercise, so that you lose fat and not muscle. Diets that are too low for the body’s basic needs will result in the body breaking down it’s protein stores (muscle) for the fuel it needs. Sort of defeats the whole purpose of the diet!

#2 – Eliminates foods or food groups.

The very first thing that alerts us that a diet is a ‘fad’ is when a particular food, or entire food group, is considered off-limits. This is a good time to talk about the low carb diets.

What is it that has made carbohydrates a bad nutrient? When you look at other countries, where the intake of carbohydrates is as high as 80%, and see that many of these countries are not suffering even close to the obesity rates we are in America, you have to wonder why they are not having the same problem. So, can it really be the carbs? Probably not. But, maybe it’s the type of carbs. Many people who decide to go on one of the popular low carbohydrate diets start to eliminate a lot of food from their diets, including all the snack foods they were eating, particularly at night. Gone are the chips, the cookies, the crackers, the ice cream. Gone are up to 300 to 1,000 calories per day! Anyone would lose weight if they cut out those many calories from their daily diet.

Another problem with eliminating entire food groups, especially on low carb diets, is that they are recommending eliminating or limiting the intake of nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables. With all the substantial research showing how beneficial these foods are to preventing various diseases, such as cancer and heart disease, it’s amazing that anyone involved in healthcare would recommend such a diet. Something to also notice, however, is that none of these fad diet books are written by anyone with a degree in nutrition. Even the medical community is confused, which explains why physicians will fall for some of the hype fad diet authors write.

But let’s talk a little more about fruits, vegetables and starches: A diet high in animal protein and animal fat has been linked to various disease and inflammation states. A diet very high in protein puts a great load on our kidneys and can contribute to constipation, gout and bone loss due to calcium depletion from the high protein load. Combine that with decreased fiber from lack of whole grains and fiber-rich fruit and vegetables, and many people just don’t feel well; they feel fatigued, sluggish and their immune system is depressed.

#3 – Starts with a shock or follows a strict plan.

When the diet says you have to start with an extremely restricted diet, or you can only eat certain foods on particular days, you know it’s a fad diet. They justify this by saying you have to clean out the body, or only certain foods will help with the weight loss process. Any change in how you currently eat will result in changes on the scale. Very few people can remain on these diets very long, so once they are ‘off’ the diet, the weight returns. The dieter learned nothing other than the misinformation the author provided them with. This can actually have far-reaching consequences, as then the dieter is more confused than ever and doesn’t know what to believe!

Once a person learns what the qualities of a healthy diet consist of, they find that their optimum calorie level is for their own needs, and they are able to achieve their goals, combining their eating plan with exercise. Not only do they start to enjoy life again, but enjoy food AND see weight loss! Although fad diet authors want you to believe their ‘miracle’ (and buy their products), there really is no get-thin-quick solution that is permanent.

But what does constitute a healthy diet? A healthy diet is one that is adequate in calories to support healthy weight, low in animal fats and saturated fats, animal protein should be very lean and adequate enough to support a diet high in fruits and vegetables and whole grain starches. Any healthy diet can include foods that are just for enjoyment, however. All foods really do fit, in moderation. A general rule is an 80/20 rule: Eighty percent of the time the diet should be healthy and then 20% of the time it can include foods you would not eat on a regular basis if you were trying to eat for health and weight loss.

#4 – Contradicts what experts say.

Authors of low carb diets say that the carbohydrates are what have made American’s fat. But they can’t explain why other countries whose diets are very high in carbohydrates don’t have the same problems with obesity. You know it’s a fad diet when the author says they have the ‘inside’ or ‘hidden’ truth about our health or diets. You also know it’s a questionable publication when they say there is a hidden agenda among health professionals or the government.

But why is America getting fatter and fatter? America is a country of grab-and-go: The faster, the better. Families seldom sit down to meals, together. There are fewer physical fitness programs in school and many of the school food choices are fast foods. People and entire families eat 2-3 of their daily meals from a drive-through or a restaurant, most of which provide very few of the foods high in nutrients and low in calories. Restaurants add extra fats to their dishes to enhance the taste, so a meal you could make at home without added fats could have up to 60% of it’s calories coming from fat to make it taste better! Plus, the serving sizes are much larger than they were 20 years ago, so most of the time the size of the meals could actually feed us for 2 to 3 meals, instead of one! However, many people still feel they must clean their plate rather than let the food ‘go to waste’. They really should say, “go to waist”!!

As you read this, think back to the last week. How often did you sit down at home and eat a home-cooked meal? Do you eat breakfast, lunch and dinner each day? How often do you exercise vigorously? In Europe, the meals are much smaller and people walk a great deal more than in America. In some neighborhoods, it’s actually impossible to walk to work, even if you live very close! Our road systems are no longer built for riding bikes or walking to work. You take your life into your hands, either from passing traffic or crime.

#5 – Relies on testimonials rather than scientific research.

The fact that Jane lost pounds in a week because she just ate cabbage soup does not mean it’s safe, effective, or that it will work for you! What if you don’t LIKE cabbage?

An example of testimonials, combined with the research to back it up, is the National Weight Control Registry. In order to join the Registry, a person has to have lost pounds and have kept it off for a year. Currently consisting of over 4500 individuals, the Registry was founded in 1993 as a longitudinal prospective study. Currently, there have been six studies resulting out of the Registry. For more information on the Registry, along with how most of the Registry members have in common, here is the website: http://www.nwcr.ws/.

#6 – Has a gimmick.

The problem with diet plans that have some type of gimmick, is people can’t stay on them and they don’t learn how to eat for the long-term. It’s no secret that all the books must have something to ‘catch’ the reader. However, hidden among all the hype are books that really DO offer safe and effective solutions to weight loss. A book written by a registered dietitian (RD) is a guarantee that the material is accurate and safe. An RD is someone whose education, training and experience all revolve around the science and practice of nutrition; these truly ARE nutrition experts.

Consider this: If you had heart disease, you would see a cardiologist who specializes in heart health. If your teeth needed work, you would see a dentist. However, many people will buy ‘diet’ books from people who are not educated in nutrition! People will buy a diet book from a person who found what worked for them, or a movie star or a physician. In many of these books, because the author does not understand nutrition, many facts are distorted or misrepresented. It may not always be on purpose, but the point is these books are written by someone who really does not know nutrition and the science behind it, so either they distort the facts, or they make them fit the gimmick they are trying to sell.

So, the next time a friend mentions this great new diet they’re on, or you see a new book that offers ‘miracle’ weight loss or something that ‘health professionals don’t really want you to know’, take a step back and ask yourself these questions:

1-	Does it promise fast weight loss?

2-	Does it eliminate any major foods or food groups?

3-	Is there a strict plan that must be followed for success?

4-	Does it contradict what nutrition experts and science has to say?

5-	Does it rely primarily on testimonials and ‘before and after’ pictures too good to be true?

6-	Is there a gimmick?

If you answered yes to all or most of these questions, after you have stepped back, walk away and find a better plan. Isn’t today time to get real and make your weight loss plan permanent and realistic?

Have you ever dreaded the idea of pulling weeds, planting a tree, or pushing a lawn mower around the yard?

Does just thinking about it make you sweat? I am sure the majority of are nodding your heads in agreement. What I am about to suggest only takes a slight change in your thinking and a bit of planning and you can learn how to lose weight and get in better shape while gardening this year.

For those of you that are already gardeners, you know that gardening is one of the best ways to get exercise because it involves all of the muscle groups in your body.

Like I mentioned earlier, we only need to change the way you think about outside chores. See I am falling into the trap too, I just called them chores. Instead, you should think of them as outdoor exercises that are designed to enhance the condition of your body and help you lose weight.

As with any exercise program, check with your doctor before starting. Make sure you are dressed properly and that you stretch before beginning.

If you aren’t used to exercising in the garden or have been relatively inactive all winter, start slowly. Start with weeding, watering, and planting seeds.

As you feel yourself getting stronger you can increase your gardening repertoire to include: pruning, heavy digging, hoeing, pushing a loaded wheelbarrow, or mowing the lawn. I think you get the idea because the list of outdoor gardening exercise ideas is endless!

Even carrying plants or a bag of potting soil to the car from the store and then out into the yard is exercise! You can potentially burn up to 300-600 calories per hour depending on your intensity and which gardening exercises you engage in.

You CAN lose weight by gardening ~ eat less and move more! The following list shows what a typical man weighing 180 pounds will burn in 30 minutes of activity. If you weigh more you can burn even more calories!

Watering lawn/garden~ 61

Raking~ 162

Bagging leaves~ 162

Planting seeds/seedlings~ 162

Planting trees~ 182

Weeding ~ 182

Clearing Land ~ 202

Digging, spading, tilling~ 202

Laying Sod~202

General gardening~ 202

Chopping wood~ 243

Gardening with heavy power tools~ 243

Mowing the lawn with a push mower~ 243

Shoveling snow~ 243

Shoveling heavy snow~ 364 cals

Tips for your success:

1. Don’t over do it~ one or two hours of gardening is plenty, especially when you are beginning!
2. Don’t lift objects that are too heavy for you. If you injure yourself, chances are that you won’t be able to continue to garden for exercise and weight loss.
3. Stretch before, during and after gardening. Don’t stay down on your knees while weeding or planting for extended periods of time~ get up and move!
4. Get out in your garden and exercise at least 3-4 times a week.
5. Continue your outdoor exercise routine even after you last blooms have faded. Shoveling the snow, raking leaves, and splitting wood are great calorie burners that will lead to weight loss!
6. Don’t forget the added benefit of growing your own healthy fruits and vegetables and your yard will look beautiful from all of your hard work!
7. Have Fun and “Just do it”!

Once you get into the habit of viewing gardening as an excellent way to lose weight and stay in shape, you may never go back to the gym again!

Before many Australians recently, a devastating story unfolded on a popular current affairs program.

We watched with compassion as the fattest man in Australia told of his most recent, serious attempt to lose weight. Approximately 12 months earlier and weighing close to 300 kilos, he under went surgery and had his stomach stapled.

I doubt there would have been one person watching not moved by this man’s depression and plight. Despite undergoing the surgery, today he could barely get through each day, both physically and mentally. He shared with us his sense of hopelessness and wanting to end it all.

It was not only his size that was causing his depression. He had to deal with a heart broken by disappointment.

You see, the stomach stapling had been a success.

He soon lost well over 50 kilos post operation and he and his family rejoiced. But then the unthinkable happened.

The weight came back. Today he weighs well over 300 kilos – more than before the stomach stapling.

This is an extreme case, but nonetheless raises a question that so many people continue to battle with.

After a diet, why does the weight come back so quickly?

To answer this we need to understand how much energy a body requires. For each pound you weigh, each day you need 12 calories to maintain your body weight. If you weigh 120 pounds you will need 120 x 12 calories, that is, 1440 calories per day to maintain that body weight. If you eat or drink more calories than your body requires, the excess energy is stored as fat. It takes 3,600 excess calories to make one pound of fat.

In this example, if your typical daily calorific intake is 2000 calories, in around 30 days you would put on between 4-5 pounds of fat!

Let’s say, you then decide to go on a restrictive diet and halve your calorific consumption to 1,000 calories per day. You stay on this diet for around a month and lose 10 pounds and now weigh 110 pounds. You feel fantastic about losing the weight but can’t keep up such a restrictive regime because you are irritable and have no energy.

So you go off your diet and go back to your usual routine of 2,000 calories a day. Remember you are lighter now and your body requires less energy to maintain its new weight. You would now require 110 x 12, that is, 1320 calories per day.

In this instance, by consuming 2000 calories daily, because you are lighter than before, you would put the weight back on in just 24-25 days!

If you want to keep the weight off you must develop a consistent change in eating habits to ensure you do not consume more than your body requires. You cannot continue to eat the same quantities and/or combinations of foods that caused you to be overweight in the first place. This will require developing an understanding of the nutritional content of food and raising your body’s metabolism through increased muscle mass and exercise.

Now that the holiday season is here, holiday foods and meals take center stage. And this is as it should be. Food is a terrific celebration of friendships, of family and of love. These celebrations do not have to lead you to unhealthy eating habits. With a little advance planning, you can really enjoy your food and the holidays. Remember that the mental attitude you bring to the table is as important as what’s on the table.

1. Plan Ahead. Without thinking about what is likely to be served, the best intentions fall by the wayside faster than you can shake a drumstick. If you absolutely cannot pass up the cornbread or cinnamon buns warm from the oven or Aunt Fay’s amazing apple cake, then you need to decide what and how much you will eat so someone does not have to roll you out. If you’re going to eat the apple cake that’s fine, but remember to eat fewer quiche and pastry puff appetizers when you arrive and to pace yourself throughout the meal.

2. Strategize. So if you’re not eating puff pastry appetizers, what are you going to eat? If you’re going to someone’s house for the holidays or if it’s in your home, serve something that is good to eat like a salad, lots of vegetables and maybe shrimp cocktails and take larger portions of those and smaller portions of the rest of the meal. Eat your vegetables first. They’ll fill you up, leaving less room for the more calorie-packed stuffing, mashed potatoes and pie.

3. Relationships first, food second. Yes, the holidays have wonderful foods – everywhere. But the reason you’re gathered together with relatives and friends, rather than eating alone is to be in contact with people. Focus on the people and what you’re doing instead of strategizing how to get those last potato puffs before Aunt Harriet does. Let Aunt Harriet have it. Besides, if her mouth is full, it will keep her from gossiping and give you the opportunity to connect with people you care about.

4. Eat small meals throughout the day. Do not make the mistake many people do of eating virtually nothing during the day to “save” extra calories for the big meal. You’ll end up hungry and eat things you don’t particularly like. Eat high-fiber mini meals for breakfast and lunch with snack (think whole fruit) in between to prevent an all-out binge.

5.	Slow down. It takes 20 minutes for your brain to register fullness. Put down your fork and talk to your neighbor.

6. Water, Water, Water. We often eat, when we are really thirsty. Drink water before, during and after the meal so you are well hydrated.

7. “Let’s toast the Holidays!” Although it is important to drink liquids, alcohol dehydrates you, acts as an aperitif and loosens your resolve to eat healthfully. Calories really add up – and not just from the alcohol. Studies show that when we drink, we eat almost 20% more than our teetotaling friends. For an easy option, consider a wine spritzer or save the first toast for when the turkey is served, and sip four ounces instead of the usual eight.

8. Go for a walk. Instead of watching football on the couch all afternoon – eating the chips and dips during time outs – why don’t you gather everyone for a long walk? Taking a 45-minute walk could use up almost 250 calories. This is a wonderful holiday tradition you could start. If nothing else, you’re not home eating the leftovers.

9. Talk kindly to yourself. Banish the mantra, “I always gain weight over the holidays.” Instead say to yourself, “I am giving myself the gift of health. I can eat and enjoy any food I want in moderation.” Or as diet Dr. Gullo says, “Thin tastes better.”

10. Enjoy the season of celebration. Remember the holidays are about coming from a place of gratitude. Now especially this year, we have a lot to be grateful for. Treat yourself well with friends, with loved ones and yes, with foods.
